Persephone’s return from the Underworld

23.5 x 23.5 cm

Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology.  She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. One day, when Persephone was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades (God of the Underworld) rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it. Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate.  When she later ate of it, it bound her to the underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year.  While Persephone resided in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything growand Winter began. On Persephone’s return Demeter allowed the earth to flourish with colour and vegetation, marking the beginning of Spring.

Butterfly Maiden and The Dancing Fern

34 x 25 cm

Butterfly Maiden is an American Indian Goddess.  According to a Papago legend, the Creator made butterflies to gladden his heart when he perceived the impermanence of life. He took a spot of sunlight, some blue from the sky, the whiteness of cornmeal, the blackness of a beautiful girl’s hair, the green of pine needles, and the red, purple, and orange of flowers. He put them in a bag which he gave to the children. When the children opened the bag, thousands of multi-colored butterflies danced about them, lighting upon their skin.

Queen Mab Summons the Fairies

(for Luna)

34 x 7 cm

….From her celestial car

The Fairy Queen descended,
And thrice she waved her wand
Circled with wreaths of amaranth;
Her thin and misty form
Moved with the moving air,
And the clear silver tones,
As thus she spoke, were such
As are unheard by all but gifted ear.”

Turning Darkness Into Light

 23 x 15 cm

The Celts observed time as proceeding from darkness to light.  They honoured the opposing balance of intertwining forces of existence: darkness and light, night and day, cold and heat, life and death.  In the dark-light cycle the Celts understood that a dark silence held whisperings of new beginnings…..as the seed below the ground began to stir.

  Imbolc

25 x 20 cm

The ancient lunar fire festival Brigid is celebrated on February 1st.  It is also called Imbolc or Imbolg which translates as “in the belly”.  This title refers to the womb of mother earth as the land or soil. The seed that was planted at the solstice is quickening and new life stirs.  This is a festival of waxing light and purification, heralding the potential of spring.

Brigid was such a beloved goddess that this festival was held in her honour.  Of her, Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912) in the Carmina Gadelica Vol. 3 wrote – “Bride with her white wand is said to breathe life into the mouth of the dead Winter and to bring him to open his eyes to the tears and the smiles, the sighs and the laughter of Spring. The venom of the cold is said to tremble for its safety on Bride’s Day, and to flee for its life on Patrick’s Day.”
